It’s Time To Get Out And Get Exploring!

Hello Spring! This is the time of year when we all crawl out of our winter dens and allow the sunshine in! From now until late fall there’s tons of stuff to do right here in gorgeous Northeast Georgia.

We start our event finding trip in Hall County. Though Gainesville, GA may be the best known city in Hall County, there are other cities that are great places to find plenty to keep you occupied. Flowery Branch is first on our list with the Spring Fun Run which is at the Old Train Depot on May 21st. Now we move to Gainesville with one of it’s own premier events , the Brenau Barbeque Championship. If you have never been you are missing one tasty happening! We move on to Towns County, home of Hiawassee where you can sample food all day at the Georgia Mountain Egg Fest. In Rabun County you may want to check out the Holiday Gorge Floor Hike at Tallulah Falls. Clarkesville, GA is a great place to play and you won’t want to miss the Mountain Laurel Festival this weekend. Dahlonega, GA is the site of the first gold rush in the U.S. There is always something going on in this historic area but this weekend the Dahlonega Arts Council is presenting the Mountain Flower Art Festival where you can buy seeds, vegetables, art and there will also be a wine tasting. If you need more art and more great food, don’t pass up the Spring Arts and Crafts Festival in Blairsville, GA which is a two day festival. We certainly cannot leave Helen, GA off of this events list. Known as Alpine Helen, this town is always full of visitors eating, shopping or just hanging out watching the people tubing down the river. There are two notable events in Helen, one is the Southern Worthersee VW/Audi Car Show which is Friday, May 20, 2011 and the Memorial Day Blast at Unicoi State Park which includes a relay race.

These are just a few of the events taking place this weekend and the next. There are too many to list here – we may have to do a part two of this blog. Northeast Georgia has so much to offer and it does not matter if you are an outdoor adventurist or more of a shopper/browser type there is always a mountain ready to hike or a quiet place to just hang out and watch the world go by.

43rd Annual Mountain Moonshine Festival

In January 1993, a group of seven individuals sat at a table in the Dawsonville Pool Room to discuss forming an organization to pick up the efforts of the local Jaycee chapter’s Empty Stocking Fund. These concerned citizens agreed first on the mission of the organization and secondly on the name of the organization. The mission- to help children in Dawson County- has never changed but grown stronger each year. In 2003, the group was asked by another organization in California to cease using the name StarBright Foundation, Inc. Their charity held the national trademark for that name and both groups had similar missions. What should the new name be? The Board took the question to the Elementary schools and asked the children. From their suggestions, the name KARE for Kids, Inc. (Kids Are Really Equal) was decided upon and the mission continued.

The organization began with only the assets of the Jaycee’s- tables, signs, etc. used to produce the annual Moonshine Festival. As the years past, the festival grew to become one of the most well known activities in the North Georgia area. This generated funds that continued the effort of providing support for underprivileged children in our community. Click here to visit website

The Dahlonega Arts Council is a 501 (c)3 non profit charitable organization.

Dahlonega Arts Council, Inc. is a non-profit, 501(C)3 organization incorporated in 1999 to administer any and all Federal, State, and Local funds for the arts programs. Our home is the Olde Cannery Arts Center.

The DAC is dedicated to educating the public to the diverse aspects and forms of art through classes, workshops, presentations, art exhibitions, concerts, festivals, studio tours, monthly public art forums, community projects, and our bimonthly newsletter.
