Dining Review: Smokin’ Gold BBQ – Dahlonega GA

Terri and I recently took a trip up to Dahlonega and stumbled across the Smokin’ Gold BBQ, located right off the square.  We had eaten here before at their old location across town but wasn’t aware that they had moved and expanded out here to the square.

We liked it then and we like it now.  This place is good.

In fact – it is officially my favorite bbq restaurant in northeast Georgia.  My wife rates it third behind a couple of other places but I’m crazy about this place.  It’s fantastic and these guys have won awards all over the place for their bbq.

I had pulled pork and pulled chicken and Terri had sliced brisket.  We both had Brunswick stew and cole slaw.  It was absolutely out of this world.  Fantastic.  The barbecue was especially good, the cole slaw and Brunswick stew were both good – but not the best we’ve ever had.  But it’s the flavor of that meat that really sets this place apart.  Our only complaint is that we felt like they could have given us larger portions (or was it just THAT good?).

Let me add one other thing…the bbq sauce is fabulous.  I don’t think I’ve ever had any with this much flavor.  You could easily eat this meat without sauce but the sauce was so good we piled it on!

So if you are roaming around northeast Georgia and you are in the mood for some good bbq we suggest you head over to Dahlonega, park on the square, find Smokin’ Gold, and have a fantastic lunch.  You can then take a walk around the square, do some shopping,  and get rid of a few extra calories.

Dining Review: Caruso’s – Dahlonega

This review is two weeks late – but better late than never!  Terri and I were up in one of our favorite towns in northeast Georgia – Dahlonega – we decided to give Caruso’s a try.  We’ve been coming up here for years but for some reason had never eaten here.  Yea I know, how did THAT happen?

It was fantastic.

We were a little upset that we had been missing out on this place for so long.  The restaurant is right there on the square so it’s very convenient from just about anywhere in the Dahlonega area.  You can park anywhere on the square

So Caruso’s is an Italian restaurant – and I understand there is a Brewery in the back (I didn’t know that until we had already left).  Terri and I both had chicken parmesan and it was about the best we’ve ever had.  The pricing was competitive with all of the other Italian restaurants out there – but the setting and atmosphere is pretty awesome.  We sat next to a window up front right on the street.  Nothing like eating some good food and doing a little people watching.

So the next time you are hanging out in Dahlonega, or even passing thru town, don’t forget about this great little Italian restaurant – if you like beer – I can’t vouch for it – but the brewery seems pretty cool too.

Why don’t these restaurants have websites?  This is my only complaint with some of these places.

The Cherokee Indians flourished here until gold was discovered; they were eventually removed on The Trail of Tears.

The county is also known as “The Heart of Georgia Wine Country”  and is home to Wolf Mountain Vineyards, Frogtown Cellars and Three Sisters Vineyards.

Dahlonega, is the only incorporated city in Lumpkin County and derives it’s name from the Indian word “Taulonica”, which means yellow gold. The U.S. Government briefly had a mint here and local gold was used on the Georgia State Capitol. You can still pan for gold in the Crisson Gold Mine. Also check out the Dahlonega Gold Museum which can found on the town square.

If you get hungry on your travels, make sure you make time for The Smith House, where it is Sunday dinner everyday; or The Oar House, where you can sit on the deck overlooking the Chestateee River.

There are many places to play and you can choose to relax or go, go, go. Take the kids to The Chestatee Wildlife Preserve or hike one of the many trails in the area such as De Soto Falls. Make sure you bring your camera!

There are many more restaurants, wineries and just general fun places than we have time to mention so – put on your comfy shoes and get ready to explore Lumpkin County!
