New Year’s Eve Celebrations – Or Chicken, Apples And Other Things Are Dropping

It’s that time of year again – the anticipation builds as the moment nears. The New Year’s Eve Big Ball Drop in Times Square begins and the end of the old year and start of the new year gets closer. When that Big Ball drops we are officially into 2012 and we are symbolically reborn. Our dreams and goals start anew and we feel refreshed.

But, what if you can’t get to Times Square? What if your plans are to stay in northeast Georgia? Well, if you want to “party” and welcome the New Year but not travel far, you are in luck! There are several ways to welcome that new start but stay and play locally. Here are some of the great (and maybe little known) ways to support our local economies and still have a great time:

Gainesville, Ga: Here you can participate in “The Chicken Drop”. Gainesville, Ga is the poultry capital of the world so what better way to ring in the New Year than with a Chicken Drop. This event benefits The Humane Society so it is a worthy cause. By the way, the Big Chicken’s name is Chuck. Click here for more info.

Cornelia, Ga: This city is home to the Big Red Apple but city officials decided to leave Big Red alone and instead they have “The Little Red Apple Drop”. This is in conjunction with the annual Apple Drop Dance on New Year’s Eve from 10pm to midnight at the South Habersham Sixth Grade Academy on Cash Street in downtown Cornelia. The charge for this event is a can of fruit for donation to the local soup kitchen and the dance is family friendly. For more information contact 706-778-8585 x 280.

Winder, Ga: Celebrate “The Jug Drop” in Winder this year. The Jug will be dropped from the hanging tower from which no one was ever hanged and is now a museum. Some say “jug” refers to Winder’s jug tavern roots, others say it stems from the city’s pottery roots. Along with the drop there will be a Miss Jug contest and Winder’s official monster, The Wog, will make an appearance. Click here for more information.

Of course, if you are not in northeast Georgia you can still participate in other drops. Lots of cities have a drop based on their local history. Dacula, Ga has the Soaring Spirit Ball Drop, Macon has The Cherry Blossom Ball Drop and Tallapoosa, Ga has the Possum Drop. The key is to have fun and be safe while ringing in the New Year. Hall County – Cities, History And Facts

Hall County is arguably the most well known county in northeast Georgia. Named for Lyman Hall, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, it was created in 1818. Lake Lanier sits partially in Hall County.

Gainesville, is Hall’s largest and most well known city and was originally known as Mule Camp Springs. There is still a Mule Camp festival every year on the town square. The city was a center of trade for the region and the site of cotton and lumber mills. It has been destroyed by fire and tornado but rebounded strongly each time. The history of this city certainly makes for a long and fascinating story.

Flowery Branch has a beautiful name but no one seems to know exactly how the name came about. The city benefits from being located on the shores of Lake Lanier as well as being easily accessible from I-985. Looking for a great place to shop? Stone Creek Village on Spout Springs Road has every shop from Target to Kohl’s. And it’s a great place to play. Since 2001 it has been the site of the Atlanta Falcons Training Facility. It you have never seen this facility, you need to plan on a trip soon.

Oakwood has been in existence since 1873. This is a busy and growing city and is home to Gainesville State College and Lanier Technical College. There are many businesses here which range from large car dealerships down to mom and pop stores. The city sits near I-985 which makes it easy to get to Atlanta or any points in any direction. The local road system has recently undergone an extensive facelift which includes lane widening and the addition of Thurmond Tanner Parkway which will be completed in the next few months and provides a direct route from Oakwood to Flowery Branch. There are many ways to get outside and play here. Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve offers miles of hiking and mountain biking trails and a golf course of the same name. It also contains Elachee Nature Center where kids of all ages can learn about the environment and animal inhabitants. Oakwood offers a little bit of everything so come on out and visit.

Lula sits in Hall and Banks county and is a smaller city but don’t underestimate it’s appeal. Here you can hang out at Rafe Banks Park where you can walk a nature trail or have a picnic. But the newest attraction in Lula is a zip line by North Georgia Canopy Tours. Fly through the tree tops for an adventure like no other.

These are just a few of the cities of note in Hall County. It’s a great area to visit.

Dining Review: Hibachi Buffet – Gainesville GA

Hibachi Buffet – Gainesville GA

So today my wife and I had lunch at a place called Hibachi Buffet in Gainesville. The restaurant is located on Browns Bridge Road in the same shopping center as Office Depot and Big Lots. Here is a map to the restaurant

Trust me – this is no fancy place. It’s a buffet focused primarily on Chinese food. It’s pretty dang good. Lunch is $5.95 (including a drink) and you can certainly get filled up! I understand if you like sushi – they have a really good selection and it’s pretty good too – personally – I don’t do sushi.

A huge negative for this place: No website. No social media. This is awful and makes me question their commitment to customer service.

Your takeaway from this blog: If you want some decent food at a great price – you will probably like this. If you don’t like buffet-style eating or if you are looking for a nice sit-down restaurant – it might not be the place for you. Great lunch choice for the locals.
