Description: This four-part series offers participants a “how-to” in mountain biking in cooperation with Woody’s Mountain Bikes. Basic skill building will progress to longer rides over four weeks. Bike safety, equipment and gear will be discussed. Mountain bikes and helmets provided. Ages 12 and older. Register in advance. $100 of $110 if paid after February 17. $5 parking. 706-878-3087.

My wife and I decided to do a short little road trip earlier today and we found ourselves in the Cleveland area just about the time we were getting hungry for lunch. Normally we would stop in at Glenda’s but we decided to try something a little different today and ended up at Blue Creek BBQ. Blue Creek BBQ is located off Hwy 75 headed towards Helen – on your left as you leave town.

This is a small place in a strip shopping -type facility – you might even fly right past it if you are not familiar with the area – check out that link above for a Google map. Nothing fancy here – it’s just one of those really cool little spots that we always seem to be attracted to – especially since it’s BBQ!

Both of us had a chopped pork plate with Brunswick stew – I also had backed beans and Terri had cole slaw. We are both big BBQ eaters so we feel like that together we’re somewhat of an authority on good, southern BBQ.

So what did we think?

We both thought the place was very, very good. Our pork was about as good as any that I’ve had recently, the baked beans and cole slaw were excellent, and the Brunswick stew was good. I can’t forget the iced tea – 32 oz for $.99 – that was sweet. It wasn’t the best BBQ I’ve ever had but it was definitely up near the top. I believe we spent less than twenty bucks for our lunch; I consider that to be affordable and reasonable.

Overall the food was good, the prices were very reasonable, and the service was friendly. Terri and I would both highly recommend this place – it’s in such a great road trip location – you should definitely stop in and give it a try. I do have two concerns – they have no website and they don’t use social media. Not good in 2011.

Helen, GA – Take the opportunity to see the interior of Smithgall Woods Conservation Area by van or hike to one of two waterfalls with your Thanksgiving guests!
Saturday, November 19, 10:00 a.m. – noon — Guided Hike on Laurel Ridge Trail with Everett Avery.
Monday, November 21, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. – Guided Hike on Martin Mine Trail with Interpretive Ranger Johnna Tuttle.
Tuesday, November 22, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. – Guided Hike on Cathy Ellis Trail with Interpretive Ranger Johnna Tuttle.
Monday, November 21, or Tuesday, November 22, 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. — Van Tour of Park and Cottages.

Welcome to Hickory Flat Pottery. I am Cindy Angliss and I have been a potter for about 30 years. This is a working studio. When you visit, you will see myself or my resident potter creating pots daily. We produce decorative functional stoneware that is oven, dishwasher, and microwave safe and meant to be used. Hickory Flat Pottery is located in the beautiful North Georgia Mountains, close to Lake Burton and Helen. The Studio and Gallery are housed in the historic 112 year old Wikle homestead.
